Understanding U.S.-Educated Language Minority Students' Pathways and Resources Needed to Support Their Completion

Many U.S.-Educated Language Minority (US-LM) Students attend community colleges after they graduate from high school because of their accessibility and affordability. US-LM students are students who came to the U.S. as children and began attending U.S. schools. They speak a language other than English at home, have exited ESOL, and graduated from a U.S. high school. Because US-LM students have had different linguistic experiences, understanding the unique educational experiences is critical in supporting their success.

Participants will:
1. Understand the different educational pathways and experiences of US-LM students
2. Learn the systemic reasons behind how language learners are supported in K-12 versus post-secondary education
3. Explore how the developmental education reform and College Completion Agenda movement impact US-LM students
4. Discuss how Carroll Community College's placement and supporting services could support US-LM students
