In the half-century between the 1863 Salon des Refuses and the 1913 Armory Show, art declared its independence from tradition and academic teaching. Since then, the explosion of new styles, genres, disciplines, and materials has only increased. From avant-garde to
derriere-garde, this workshop examines select works and movements of the last century+ in the context of art history and rapid societal change.
